"Silent Night Holy Night"
SILENT NIGHT HOLY NIGHT Lyrics by John Denver The Muppets
Stille nacht! Heil'ge nacht! Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute hoch heilige paar. Holder knab' im lockigten haar,
Schlafe in himmlischer ruh!
On December 24, 1818, the curet of a parish in Obendorf, Austria, Josef More,
gave a poem that he written to a friend of his, Hans Greuber, who was also the
choirmaster and organist in that church. He asked mister Greuber if he would
write music for his poem and that he might write it for two solo voices and guitar
accompaniment. Because the organ being broken, he desperately wanted music
being part of their Christmas Eve service. Mr. Greuber wrote the melody to a song
which has become the most beloved of all Christmas carols. Stille nacht, in English,
silent night. Schlafe in himmlischer ruh. Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright.
Proud young virgin mother and child. Holy infant so tender and mild.
Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.
